Somalia is one of the poorest countries in the world, a situation aggravated by the civil war and the absence of a functioning national government for over a decade. Such factors has resulted in protected economic and vulnerability and loss of livelihood particularly central south Somalia. This led Mogadishu to receive continuously new displacements who are lacking comprehensive social protections and suffer food insecurity leading to severe malnutrition particularly children who are under five, elderly people lactating and pregnant mothers and also have no access to services (health, education, WASH) and skill developments.
Therefore, Voluntary Action Committee in Somalia (VACSOM) has identified the need of employable skills as one of the alternatives assessed to have potential to create employment opportunities for the youth, IDPs and poor Hosted Communities. VACOSM in partnership with INGCO TOOLS proposed vocational training project in Mogadishu, Somalia. The project aimed to address the needs of skills training among the unemployed to earn income through self-employment. The project targets 1000 internally displaced people and the host community aged 18-35 years. The beneficiaries will be chosen based on vulnerability indicators in phase one, female-headed households, and family size ad literacy levels. The students will be all trained on literacy and numeracy. The beneficiaries will be categorized on their preferred skill set in tailor, plumber, electrician, beauty salon, construction/carpentry/masonry, and tree planting/fruit nursery. They will also be given a food and transportation voucher of 100 USD per month for the training duration. This will have to ensure that their food will secure at home so as not to disrupt their learning.
